A lot has happened over the last five years, from a global pandemic to the cost of living crisis. So how has this impacted and changed the dating world?
Boux Avenue, the UK’s leading lingerie brand, has discovered that the amount of UK couples who have met through a dating app appears to be increasing. In an exclusive online YouGov poll of over 2,000 UK adults aged 18-45*, meeting through a dating app came in second place, when we asked those that are in relationships. So does that mean by not meeting your potential future partner in person first, are you more likely to ‘Vet’ them? Well with 71.2 percent of UK adults aged 18-45 who have met up with someone via a dating app admitting to vetting their potential date on social media , we think we can safely say yes.
How met current partner – asked to those in relationships
- 18.8% - Through Friends
- 18.1% - On a dating app
- 16.7% - At work
How this looked 5 years ago – asked to 18-45 year olds
- 13.2% - Through Friends
- 10.7% - At work
- 9.7% - On a dating app
Online dating appears to have overtaken meeting your partner at work, and is very close behind through friends. With hybrid working now becoming more popular in the last few years since COVID, it is no surprise to see this has dropped down in the list. If you are not in the office much it is harder to build relationships, and your paths may never cross, especially if you always go in on different days or not at all.
With it being evident that more and more people are meeting their future partners online, we were intrigued to see if there is a vetting process before physically meeting in person and what is the best platform to find out all the deets on your potential new date.
According to the online survey a staggering 75 percent of women aged 18-24 who have met someone via an app, and 68 percent of men in the same group confessed to having used a social media platform to ‘vet’ a date they met online. So what are the top platforms used for a bit of online stalking to understand more about your future date. Respondents surveyed listed their top platforms for vetting a future partner**.
- Women: 57.4% - Facebook
- Women: 54.28% - Instagram
- Women: 21.96% - Google
Only 19.23% of women who have met someone via an app have never vetted a date on social media
- Men: 44.95% - Facebook
- Men: 40.92% - Instagram
- Men: 18.14% - Twitter
Only 23% of men who have met someone via an app have never vetted a date on social media
With over 70% of the respondents surveyed admitting to Vetting their future date. You may want to check out Boux’s recent blog on what are the UK’s biggest first impression ICK’s, especially when it comes to what is on your social media channels. The top three Boux Avenue discovered were: photos of your ex, gym selfies and status check ins. So you may want to quickly check through all your social platforms and remove any of these top ICK’s.
Now you're all fully ‘vetted’ out, but how long should you wait, before actually asking them out on a date? Looking at the online survey it seems men are a lot more eager to meet sooner than women. Coming in top spot for men with 12.2 percent, they are keen to meet up in person after 1 week. Whereas women prefer to talk a bit longer with 2 to 3 weeks taking top spot, with 13.9 percent.
We already know women are more likely to ‘VET’ their potential date, so probably want the extra week to men, to be able to do a thorough stalk through all of their platforms, making sure they feel comfortable to meet up in person.
With all this vetting going on it looks like the UK likes to do their research. So when you finally do go on that ultimate first date, be sure to check out Boux’s UK’s biggest first impression ICK’s, where we discovered in our exclusive online YouGov survey, what are the biggest ICK’s for both men and women on a first date, to help you get that all important second date.
